I’ve been pastoring a church in Warren Michigan since 1997. Check us out at refugechurchwarren.com. I’m passionate about serving the poor, engaging people with the gospel of Jesus, and encouraging people to become worshippers. I’m a counter-cultural risk-taker who’s not afraid to ruffle a few feathers. Most of my friends think I’m a little nuts. I probably am.
I center what I’m about around James 1:27 – “Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.”
I’m also a regular guy. If I’m being completely honest, I have to admit that I’ve had issues with pastors and Christians. The last thing I ever want to be considered is a typical “preacher”. I’m not interested in the game. I find real life much more interesting. So I live it. I’m imperfect but I tend to think we ALL are, some of us are just better at hiding it.
I have kids which has filled my life in ways I never imagined possible. I love being a dad.
I love the church. I still believe that the church is the greatest hope for evangelizing the world even though it is full of imperfect people.
I love to worship. I play a Fender Strat and love rockin’ worship. I grew up a very musical person, becoming a self-taught keyboardist in Jr. high school and eventually learning guitar because it’s just more fun to play. I love to sing and lead worship and trend toward more modern, current worship bands like Elevation Band and Jesus Culture.
Be authentic. Be real. Be you…and I’ll be me.
This site is where I will write my thoughts on various subjects. My thoughts do not necessarily represent my church, and likely they won’t represent a large portion of my fellow pastors. In 30 years of ministry I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I hope to offer some practical insights from a continual screw up. I also hope to encourage other pastors and churches with messages that were never spoken to me when I needed them most. So join me for the ride.
